This thought has occurred to me today, how important is our identity?   What defines our identity? It is our skin color, jobs, relationships, family name, or what society says?

Some things will not change, like our family of origin, our skin color, or where we were born.  However, there are things that do change like societal norms.

So where do we put our true “fact of being”?    The more I study the Bible the more I realize the importance of creating an identity for myself that goes deeper than just what people see, and one that does not change.  The only way I know to do this is to identify myself as a Christ follower, because in 2,000 + years Jesus has transcended every race, language, culture, and country, and He and His word have not changed no matter what direction society is going.  Jesus is always constant.  There is great comfort in that.

So what does it mean to identify with Christ?  Well according to the above definition it means “the fact of being what a person is…”  Translation, being or acting the way Jesus acted.  How does that work?  Spending time getting to know Jesus and His followers asking how He acted, responded to people and situations and the hard part, DOING what Jesus would do.

This is NOT an easy task, especially in todays’ busy distracted society.  However, it is important, especially in light of the fact that so many identities are being challenged.  Here is one thing that brings me great comfort in choosing to identity with Jesus, when my identity is challenged it is Jesus that is being challenged and He does not seem be bothered by challenges.   What does seem to bother Him is people who take advantage of the weak and those who are not fully committed to Him.

So as for me, I choose to identify with Jesus.   More to come as I learn how to do this.
